Each release bears a year of historical significance.  Every whisky tells another story.

1888 – THE YEAR THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

In 1888, Reefton became the first town in the Southern Hemisphere to establish a public electricity supply.  A milestone born of vision, determination and innovation.

More than a century later, 1888 marks the first release in our Moonlight Creek Chronicle Series.

More than a whisky.  1888 is the first chapter in an unfolding story.

Tasting Notes

Cask Type: ex-Bourbon
ABV: 40%
Malt: 100% NZ malted barley
Non-chill filtered, all natural colour and flavour
Nose: Rich treacle, black doris plum and fresh pear
Palate: Creamy and elegant with waves of toffee and warming cinnamon
Finish: Sweet fudge and ginger warmth

 

Shipping is $7.95 for urban delivery, and $12 for rural delivery, in New Zealand. Free shipping for all orders (excluding RTDs) > $140. Delivery is by New Zealand Couriers. We endeavour to process all our orders within 1-2 working days.

Due to high courier rates for the RTD cases shipping is $7.50 per case. We cap the cost at four cases, so if you order 4 or more, the shipping won’t increase.

All customer orders are carefully wrapped to ensure that products arrive safely and undamaged.

Alcohol cannot be left unattended or with a person under the legal drinking age. If you wish to have your goods left unattended, you will need to specify this in the Delivery Instructions section of the shopping cart.

At present we only ship to New Zealand. We cannot deliver to The Chatham Islands.

HOW DO I CHANGE MY ORDER?
If for any reason you wish to change your order, please email us as soon as you receive your confirmation email. Our system is designed to fill orders and get them on their way to you as quickly as possible. Once an order has been processed for the courier we are unable to make any changes.

If your order arrives in poor condition or damaged please contact us immediately and we will put it right.

To be eligible for a return, your item must be unused, unopened and in the same condition that you received it. It must also be in the original packaging.

We love our products but note that the taste of spirits is subjective and as such we can not offer returns for any spirits that do not meet your expectations in terms of taste or smell.

Sizing charts are included for clothing so please check these and choose carefully as we are not able to exchange.

Single Malt Whisky

Moonlight Creek Single Malt Whisky is crafted from grain to glass at our distillery in Reefton, West Coast, New Zealand.

Selecting only the finest barley grown and malted in New Zealand, this grain is milled, mashed and fermented on-site, before being double pot distilled in our handcrafted, copper stills. Our spirit cuts (the careful selection of the prime spirit for maturation) are sensory based and wholly reliant on the experience and mastery of the distiller, with only the finest spirit selected for cask.

Moonlight Creek Whisky is matured in ex-bourbon oak casks, which are specifically selected for the flavour and character they impart. Each aspect of this process influences the finished Moonlight Creek Whisky’s refined profile.

The result is a balanced whisky with a sweetness imparted by the malted barley and the size and shape of the copper stills in which it is crafted.

Distillery Manager, Nick Secker brings a wealth of experience and local knowledge to his role. Nick has been part of Reefton Distilling Co. and the development of our spirits from the beginning. After a brief time away managing his family’s business and further study, Nick returned in 2025 to lead production and our whisky management programme.

Our vision was to create a rounded mouth feel from the careful cutting of the spirit run, which allows a balanced amount of the various elements to be introduced. Rich colour and soft vanilla notes are introduced by the aged bourbon oak casks. Moonlight Creek Whisky is then carefully proofed to taste with pristine West Coast spring water. This careful process allows a hint of spiciness from the underlying alcohol to shine through on the aftertaste, rounding out the taste experience with a reassuringly warm glow.
